Captive: The Beginning
The idea for Captive came to me late one night, when yet another chronic migraine kept me from sleeping. I wasn’t trying to come up with a book idea at all, but all of a sudden, this metaphor for chronic pain popped into my head, and I simply could not shake it.
I didn’t want to forget it, so I grabbed my journal and began scribbling down the ideas in the dark, unsure if I was even writing inside the lines of the page. Next thing I knew, I had written seventeen poems in the dark.
Even then, I didn’t think I was writing a book. But over the course of the next few days, I kept writing. Before I knew it, I was fifty poems in. I told my dear friend and fellow author, Nikki Merriman (check out her work!!), and asked her, “Did I just start writing a book?” She replied, “I think you did!” So, I kept writing.
I am unbelievably excited to share this piece of my heart with you. Chronic pain is no joke, and it is my hope that these poems will make those who also struggle with it feel seen and understood, and hopefully also increase empathy and understanding in those who don’t.
Thank you for joining me on this journey!
Love,
Lindsay
